Common Myths about Organic Foods

Myth #1 :   If it is organic, it must be nutritious.

Eating organic food is healthy in that you are less likely to consume the chemicals used in pesticides and in the growth hormones given to the animals. However, organic food is not necessarily more nutritional than non-organic ones. The nutritional value of the organic crop depends on the soil quality on which it was grown, while the nutritional value of poultry depends on the quality of the feed given to the animals. Thus, the organic food is not necessarily more nutritious than the non-organic counterpart.

Myth #2 :   Natural means organic, organic means natural.

It is common to find the word "natural" being labeled on the packaging of a variety of foods. This label, according to USDA guideline, means that the food has been least processed and does not contain artificial ingredients, colors or preservatives. It is different from the "organic" label which means that no synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotics or growth hormones has been used in the farming process.
